A Band of Brothers: The History of Camp Maxwelton
Camp Maxwelton was started back in 1948 by Knubby and Rosa McLaughlin near the First Presbyterian Church in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia. The camp moved a few years later to its current location at the foot of Jump Mountain. Now run by Rosa, Leebo, and Nancy McLaughlin, Maxwelton stresses brotherhood, sports, and friendship. The camp is a four week camp for boys, ages eight to fifteen. After the four week session, there is a three work girl's camp, called Camp Lachlan. Maxwelton is entering its 51st year. An important part of Maxwelton is the brotherhood aspect. In the four weeks, each boy becomes close friends with the other campers, the staff, and the owners.

In the valley....
At the begining of Maxwelton, each boy is placed into a cabin with about 6 other boys and two counselors. While the cabin has all age groups, the boys will be placed in an activity group, which he will spend most of the day with. The day is broken into several sections. There are four sport activities in the morning. In the afternoon, the campers are broken up into different teams for more organized sports. There is a chance for free time in the evening. There are many different schedualed activities, so each day is a different experiance. After the four weeks have come to a close, each of the campers feel that Camp Maxwelton is their home away from home.
